Visitor Comments about this Photo:

This is an interesting photo - On Sunday, July 26. 1987, N&W 1218 led an excursion between Alexandria, VA and Charlottesville, VA, and then left the train there, and proceeded south deadhead to Roanoke to pull trips out of Roanoke on the following weekend as part of the 1987 NRHS Convention. The Sunday trip back to Alexandria from Charlottesville was pulled by three of the Southern Railway FP7s. Their next excursion assignment was between Hagerstown, MD and Luray, VA on September 10, 1987. If the trip in the photo was indeed on Wednesday, July 29, 1987, it could have been a ferry move from Alexandria possibly back to Roanoke for the Convention. It was not uncommon for the Trip Committee to sell one-way tickets on some of these ferry moves to allow railfans to enjoy a unique one-way trip.

This information is taken from the excellent book "Steam's Camelot" by Jim Wrinn, and my own collection of trip flyers and photographs.

Thanks Brian, I vaguely remember this scenario. I might have some views of the N&W 1218 trip, will have to do a little digging. Would you know the name of this trestle.
