B&M 6211 at Bedford MA Freight House

The hardest part of getting a picture from here, was finding an quick photo opportunity with no one walking or riding by as this area is a very popular spot.

The 6211 was one of 15 Budd RDC-2's built for the B&M, and the last RDC built with the original design in August 1955. Later built RDC-2's 6212, 13, & 14 had the latter design with smaller cab windows & headlamps mounted along the roof.

Stuffed & mounted, the interior of the 6211 is as impeccably restored as the exterior with the comfortable high back blue seats, (yes they flip), an area for table & displays, and the baggage section filled with artifacts. The cab on the "A" end is complete with controls, but you can't go in there for obvious reasons. The "A" end shows off the B&M Minuteman logos.

The Freight House Gift Shop has everything a rail hobbyist could want, along with a friendly staff. It's great this community embraces its railroad past, while making the best use of the abandoned line for a busy rail trail.

Several other B&M RDC's are in various stages of restoration.
RDC-1 B&M 6154, one of the last of the RDC's built for the B&M, is in a similar situation that's on display at the Troy NH Station, after being trucked from Bellows Falls to Troy after years of storage.

RDC-2, B&M 6213, which led a much harsher existence along with 6214 sat derelict for years, near North Station. 6213 was brought to Billerica for possible preservation. Both 6213 &14 were both heavily vandalized, with 6214 getting scrapped.

The 6211 is open on weekends to see. Learn all the good stuff at www.bedforddepot.org.
