According to the Mad River & NKP museum's Facebook page, it is being painted into the ALCo S5 demonstrator scheme to protect the unit rather than Maroon and Gold because it is cheaper and they wanted it to look nice on their grounds. Comments by someone connected to the unit's preservation says the eventual plan is to bring it to the east coast for display.
