The morning fog has yet to burn off as MBTA F40PH #1000, the "Henry Hersey", pushes train 2204 south across the Merrimack River at Haverhill on its way to North Station Boston. Hersey (aka "Mr. Commuter Rail") was a Needham resident, transit activist, and member of the MBTA Advisory Board in the 1970s and 1980s who was instrumental in re-establishing Needham's commuter rail service following Boston's Orange Line/ Amtrak SW Corridor build out of 1979 to 1987. Also, the former Birds Hill station on the Needham Line was re-named Hersey station in his honor.
