This "natural crossover" was built by ATSF, to serve its First District, long before CTC. It served rigidly directional double track, where facing point crossovers were not allowed, due in part to high speeds. Here, right hand running was changed to left hand running. Westbound trains, as above, were lined up to eventually descend the steeper South track from Summit to Cajon. Heavy east bound trains climbed on the newer, more easily graded North track, starting in San Bernardino. With CTC and on-line control points, having high speed turnouts, that basic operating pattern remained, but in much more flexible form.
