Washout at MP 23.3

This washout occurred in 2011 during Hurricane Irene. The owner of the railroad, Ulster County, has no plans to repair this section of the U&D. The track is still intact from MP 23.3 to MP 21.59. After 21.59 the track was removed for a trail. From MP 23.3 to Phoenicia at MP 27.5, the tracks are used by a railbike operation. No trains have run west of MP 21.59 since 2016.

Visitor Comments about this Photo:

A location which historically had track sag problems, the (now deceased) Roadmaster had been productively attending to this for years with his track crews, and it should be noted that trains had not been running over this section for quite some time prior to the Tropical Storm of 2011. Unfortunately, another high ranking official with the railroad took it upon himself to cut the slope in a less than educated attempt to make repairs. Tropical Storm Irene exacerbated the situation.
