Gateway Eastern's Lone Locomotive at Mojave, CA on Union PacificGateway Eastern (GWWE) 2000, Gateway Eastern's sole locomotive, is far from its home on the north side of East St. Louis, IL as it helps to accelerate an eastbound UP covered hopper train away from Mojave, CA. Gateway Eastern was a subsidiary of Gateway Western, which by 2003 was itself a part of the expanded Kansas City Southern. It is obvious that the GP38 is earning its keep here and not dead in train, as there is exhaust visible above the unit and it was soon smoking harder than the 4 ex-SP SD45's ahead of it or the 2 UP SD40-2's behind it. Assuming my memory of the year is correct, UP 3417 has only a month or so left to work as a UP unit before being retired and sold to Progress Rail, where it would be renumbered to UP 6799 and leased back to UP on an as-needed basis.
