Gritty Splendor

New Haven Class J-1 Mikado #3019 was a pretty conventional steam locomotive here seen at Boston in 1939. Built for the New Haven n 1916 along with 24 sisters, they were among the "big engines" in World War 1 but served in "supporting roles" through World War 2. Ironically at the end of steam when the big power was already scrapped, sister 3016 served on the last steam fan trip. Note the low profile of this engine with the low-slung cab designed to operate under the low bridges of the Readville-Boston Freight Cutoff.

It's interesting that the coal pile in the full tender exceeds the low clearance cab by a couple of feet. Wonder if there was coal scattered around those low bridges on the freight cutoff?

This is the Cedar Hill coaling tower in New Haven.
