In the early '80s, AT&SF and SP attempted to merge to become Southern Pacific Santa Fe (SPSF) and, in anticipation of ICC approval, a number of SF and SP units were painted in a red and yellow scheme nick-named Kodachrome due to the colors' resemblance to Kodak Kodachrome slide film boxes (popular with railfans). Alas, ICC denied approval of the merger of the 2 RRs but many re-painted engines were left to roam the systems. Railfans joked that SPSF stood for Shouldn't Paint So Fast.
