C&NW Eastbound Freight Passing Huron, SD RoundhouseAn eastbound C&NW freight passes the Huron, SD Roundhouse led by 5 units: CNW 6609 (SD9), CNW 1552 (RS-3), CNW 1666 (RSD-5), CNW 1685 (RSD-5), and CNW 53 (RS-2). CNW 53 worked for the Chicago Great Western with the same number until that railroad was bought by the CNW in 1968. Another Alco and a 1/2 are parked at the roundhouse, or at least it appears that a unit is being scrapped between the nose of the 6609 and the gondola parked on a roundhouse lead. Train included a lot of freight from Rapid City, including DMIR covered hoppers of clay for taconite pellets and CNW gonds of pulpwood. CNW 1552 had been switching in Huron the previous evening, so the train seems to be headed out of town, though my memory has it arriving. Perhaps it left the train out of town, made a pickup, including new power, and then headed east thru Huron after retrieving the rear of its train.
