Interesting that this RDC has no pilot - was that typical? Also headlight doesn't appear to be on - is this a going away capture?

The Budd was southbound from Waterbury as indicated in the caption. Note the engineer in the cab and the exhaust blowing back. As for the missing pilot, I assume that was the result of some sort of mishap. It probably wasn't a great idea to run the car without it, but things were less formal in those days.
