Blizzard of 1978

What at the time was a record-setting snowstorm coupled with gale force winds shut down transportation in the Boston area on February 6-7, 1978. As the storm began, a pair of RDCs running inbound from Lowell passed the former North Somerville (Ball Square) station. The storm greatly hastened the end of self-propelled Budds in Boston due to many cars suffering ice damage to their underfloor engines.

Photographed by Tom Nelligan, February 6, 1978.
