NH in South Boston

This was the south end of the New Haven's once-vast South Boston freight terminal as seen looking north from the West 2nd Street bridge. Alco S-1 0995 is switching a cut of cars past the yard office. The Summer St. bridge and Commonwealth Pier (now the "World Trade Center") can be seen in the distance. Penn Central consolidated Boston freight operations at Beacon Park in the 1970s and today the only sign of what once was here amid all the commercial development is the unused "Track 61" that extends to the waterfront.
