Mountaineer At Tidewater Amtrak SDP40F #539 heads up the "Mountaineer" at the passenger depot in Norfolk & Western's Lambert's Point yard in Norfolk, Va. soon after the train's startup in 1975.
The Norfolk-Chicago route was set up as an experimental service across the N&W main through Virginia and West Virginia. It combined with the Washington-Chicago "James Whitcomb Riley" at C&O's Russell Yard near Ashland, Ky. for the rest of its run.
The train never got much past its normal five-car consist of baggage, coach, dome coach, diner-lounge and sleeper, and was replaced two years later by another short-lived run, the "Hilltopper". Unknown photographer 1975. Added to the photo archive by Thomas Mccann, June 15, 2010. Railroad: Amtrak.» Contact the person who posted this photograph.
