NEW HAVEN DL-109's LEAVING THE EAST SIDE TUNNELThe railfan extra is exiting the tunnel under "college hill" and entering the Providence station. The 5,080 foot tunnel was opened November 15, 1908 and was built mainly to route the Providence, Warren & Bristol electric trains into the Union Station. The PW&B had originally terminated at Fox Point which it reached over the India Point drawbridge. The tunnel was also considered to be a way of relieving the bottleneck at Pawtucket but the line relocation through Central Falls and Pawtucket finished in 1916 pretty much solved the problem. The tunnel line crossed the Seekonk River on a large Bascule bridge and connected with the old Boston & Providence mainline between East Junction, MA and India Point, RI. The New Haven's tunnel is sometimes confused with the trolley/bus tunnel under "college hill" which crossed it at a lower level and was more obvious and well known. I am standing on what had been the PW&B terminal stub tracks which at this time are serving the post office.
