Big Power for the R&N

When the Reading Blue Mountain & Northern (aka the Reading & Northern) took over much of the former Reading lines northwest of Reading, Pa., its locomotive roster consisted mainly of four-axle yard- and road-switchers.

As it began to expand operations and routes, including the former Lehigh Valley/CNJ lines up the Lehigh River Gorge, its power requirements grew also. It responded by acquiring a diverse collection of six-axle power, mainly from the Union Pacific family.

Two of these are shown by the sand tower at the road's Port Clinton, Pa. shops; SD50 #5014 is former UP; SD40-2 #3054 is a former C&NW unit. Former SP and Grand Trunk Western units also grace the roster.
