Via Barbary Coast. 578 Type G - Muni's oldest streetcar. As seen, the car is painted for its former Market Street Railway Company. The streetcar has a very distinguished and interesting history, dating back to its 1896 original building by the John Hammond and Company of San Francisco during the Barbary Coast era. In 1907 it was converted to a sand car by the United Railroads of San Francisco, where it then wore number 0601. Later, it reverted back to the Market Street Railway Company, where it continued as a sand car. It was later picked up by Muni, who in 1956, restored the car back to its original 1896 form.
