Subway archeology.Deep inside the confines of Boston's Tremont Street Subway, an abandoned incline remains unused for many years. We are looking south towards the portal of the Pleasant Street Incline. This incline was used by inbound trolleys on now-extinct Roxbury and South Boston routes, heading downward to subway level in a "bellmouth" towards Boylston Street Station. The Tremont Street and Shawmut Avenue lines converge just beyond our view in the tunnel. We are located under Tremont Street, next to what was the Metropolitan Opera House (now the Wang Center for the Performing Arts). The subway and its branches, over the years, has had many changes. Lines have been discontinued, changed, and re-routed since 1895-1898's pioneering installation and operation by the Boston Transit Commission and the Boston Elevated Railway. Some sections remain long unused as in the photo - equipped, but with rusty rail and tarnished copper overhead.
