After nearly 150 years of railroad operations, the scrapper called on the Lowell Secondary this Fall. A lonely signal, long out of service after reverting to manual block operation in the seventies, persists as the ties and rail are salvaged. A derailment severed the line in 2000. At one time, this Old Colony line was a major interchange and connection to the B&M and mills of Lowell and Lawrence. It lost status after the New Haven merged with Penn Central and interchange was moved elsewhere. It was built to high standards with long stretches of deep ballast, grade crossing protection, heavy jointed rail and signaled territory.
