A very old wedge????

This past Saturday 3/27/04 my friend Rich Roberg and I were waiting to get a photo of the coal train entering the west portal of Hoosac Tunnel and was killing time looking about and I spotted this round metal object sticking out of a crack in the ledge. Rich climbed over a few feet to it to investigate as to what it was. I took a shot of him pulling it out. Too our amazement it was loose so out it came. It is approximately 9" long and 1" in diameter. There are no markings on it that I can see. It appears to have been hand forged. Now the question is how old?? This could have been there from the beginning of the construction of the tunnel or maybe some more recent work. Any ideas????? Jon
