On Sunday 10/24, Amtrak ran two qualifying Extras from Rutland to Burlington in preparation for the launch of service that will extend the "Ethan Allen Express" northward to the Queen City. The current terminus is in Rutland. To avoid having to wye the train in Rutland and adding more time to the trip, it appears that a locomotive on each end, or one of Amtrak's former F40PH/PHR's that were converted into non-powered control units, or a cab car could be used in their train sets.

Amtrak 406, a F40PHR, was retired from service in 2001, rebuilt in 2011 as a NPCU as part of Amtrak's 40th Anniversary Exhibit train. The appearance was returned to look as original as possible. 406 retains a head end power generator. Amtrak 713 was doing the pushing on the return trip south. 713 is a P32AC-DM, a dual mode engine designed to run on both diesel power and 3rd rail in the tunnels to Penn Station.
