Often quoted "The Engine that Derailed Amtrak"...SDP-40F's lead the southbound Silver Star into W. Palm Beach, FL station in February '77. This class of locomotives, Amtrak's first "new" order of the period, were later determined to be involved in many derailments, and therefore were limited to restricted speeds, not great for on-time performance. Many parts were then taken from this class of EMD's to build the next generation of Amtrak power, the F-40's.
