Alco RS Units at Pittsfield, 1955

New York Central RS-2 8222 and RS-3 8319 head an unidentified train at Pittsfield, Massachusetts in August 1955. The second unit's steam generator may have been needed for train air conditioning, and it may be running in "boxcar" mode (with its own engineer) rather than MU. There is some uncertainty in my sources whether the RS-2 and RS-3 could operate in MU configuration, due to differences in electrical connections.

Photographed by Richard C. Leonard, August, 1955.

Railroad: New York Central.
