Photo of Spring surprise.
Spring surprise.

Dover at Wash - When the weather thaws, the pavement crumbles, usually resulting in cursing. However, this Spring surprise partially unveiled an ancient "grand-union". The rails had been left in place after the 1938 end of regular service here, used only occasionally afterwards by owl and work cars. Later, they had been paved over with asphalt and all but forgotten until nature intervened.

Photographed by Paul Joyce, April, 1978.
Added to the photo archive by Paul Joyce, June 6, 2006.
