Photo of Boston Trolley Archaeology.
Boston Trolley Archaeology.

A shot of the old Court Street Station from inside the Tremont Street Subway during a trolley archaeological expedition. Court Street Station was opened in 1904 as a temporary terminal for the newly opened East Boston Tunnel that connected Court Street to Maverick Square. It was originally planned to have this line connect with the Tremont Street Subway, but the line was later extended to Bowdoin Square instead, with rapid transit cars replacing trolleys. Climbing up a considerable level inside the adjacent Tremont Street Subway (in the dark, equipped with heavy duty flashlight), I located the "Court Street" sign, visible still in the grime. This area abuts the old "Scollay Square" Station (now Government Center).
