Narrow Gauge Tunnel. During a Boston Street Railway Association field trip, buffs examine the then exposed, north side inbound tunnel portal for the old Boston, Revere Beach, and Lynn Railroad. The twin tunnels in East Boston, carried narrow-gauge steam, later electrified equipment, to its ferry terminal at Jeffries Point, as well as to the city of Lynn. The tunnels, bored between 1875-1894 under Sumner Street, have since been filled with earth, as in later years they became a hazard and dumping ground for refuse. With proper orientation, you can still see the top granite blocked outline of the tunnels, left exposed.
