Photo of D&H Gravity Railroad Station at Waymart, PA
D&H Gravity Railroad Station at Waymart, PA

The D&H Gravity Railroad was constructed between 1826 and 1829 to connect the D&H Canal at Honesdale, PA with the vast coal deposits located between Carbondale and Scranton. Passenger service commenced in 1877 and lasted until 1899 when the gravity railroad was abandoned. Waymart got its name since this was where coal cars were weighed prior to being sent on to Honesdale for loading into barges ("weigh"-mart). This is believed to be the only remaining D&H Gravity RR station in existence.
