D&H Gravity Railroad Stone Arch Bridge at Keens Pond, PA

This stone arch bridge located at Keens Pond, PA (just east of Waymart, PA) was originally part of the D&H Gravity Railroad. The gravity was constructed between 1826 and 1829, and was in operation until 1899. At that time, the D&H converted the gravity to a regular "steam locomotive" powered railroad. The bridge then became part of the D&H Honesdale Branch, which ran from Honesdale, PA to Carbondale. Traffic was always light on the branch (due to stiff grades and a very circuitous route that even included a switchback!) and the D&H finally abandoned the line in 1931.
